Spring greetings to everyone!  The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, New York Chapter is a storied organization.  Ed Sullivan and Walter Cronkite were some of its early presidents.  I am proud to have helmed the New York Chapter over the past four years.  Much was accomplished to make our chapter a stronger, more viable and compliant industry trade organization.

New York media outlets break news, cover the sports we love, and bring us the information and entertainment we desire.  How many other industries have this daily ability to affect our lives, touch our hearts, and make an impact?  Many of those moments were featured in the 2021 submissions we received during the recent NY York Chapter Emmy ® season.  After judging from our many sister chapters, 587 Emmy nominations were announced in 120 categories.  A total of 135 Emmy statuettes were presented to many excited recipients at our 62nd Annual New York Emmy Awards on Saturday, May 4.  As another Emmy year winds down, I would like to thank all of you who participated in the current season.  It is a pleasure to salute each of you for your success and your pursuit of excellence.

We are all pushed to adapt to new changes in technology and media consumption while also producing quality work as we face more competition than ever before.  Our New York area colleagues have capably mastered the integration of these advances to produce newscasts, sports events, and entertainment programs that are informative, engaging, and exciting -- regardless of platform.

Walt Disney once said that our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.  More than fifty year ago, a young ABC executive named Al Primo envisioned a community and beat-focused way to present local news.  He hired minority and female reporters.  Anchor interactions were common.  That trailblazing concept became Eyewitness News.  We were honored to present the Governors’ Award to ABC7’s Eyewitness News on its 50th anniversary and to showcase this successful news format.

On March 14, 2019, The Sharecare Awards were launched in association with The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, New York Chapter.  Dr. Mehmet Oz and Daphne Oz co-hosted this event in Atlanta.  New York Chapter Health & Science focused Emmy nominees will once again be eligible to participate in the Call for Entries for the Sharecare Awards.  Stay tuned for more details on the special waiver that some New York Emmy-nominated or award recipients will have.

Please reach out to Sean Schenk, Director of Awards & Communication, if you have not completed your mandatory judging assignments.  This will save you money during our next Emmy season.  It also allows you to see the outstanding work being done by our other media colleagues around the nation.

Ailette Artiles, Acting Membership & Marketing Manager, is working hard to engage our membership by securing compelling industry speakers for workshops and seminars. In addition, Phyllis Bishop ensures that our membership has access to advance screenings of the most anticipated movie and series releases. Our Constant Contact e-blasts provide all the latest events, announcements, and membership opportunities. As we embark on our 63rd year, you will want to be part of the exciting events still to come so please take advantage of the many ways a NY Chapter membership can benefit you.

As my term as president winds down, I am humbled by the chance to serve our members and make the New York Chapter a better organization than it was when I took over on June 1, 2015.  It has been rewarding to launch the Gold Circle Induction and blend it with the Silver Circle Induction.  Three stellar ceremonies were held in 2016, 2017, and 2018.  We can also be proud of the production value upgrades made to the gala.  It has been live streamed since 2016, and able to be accessed on Facebook Live since 2017.  Video clip integrations were launched in 2018.  Special thanks go to our Award Chair, Marvin Scott, the Awards Committee, the members of the Board of Governors and Executive Committee, and the NY Chapter staff for their invaluable contributions.  I want to single out Sean Schenk, Director of Awards & Communications, Ailette Artiles, and Phyllis Bishop for their many contributions.  Silver Circle Member Bruce Brauer did many of our gala logos.  Finally, I would like to thank Jason Palmer for handling our bookkeeping work.  Collectively, we accomplished a great deal.

N.J. Burkett has my best wishes as he takes over as President of the New York Chapter.  May our organization continue to have many golden moments!

Warm regards,

Denise Rover
