Martha Lubell will show her film, "Queen of the Mountain"
I am delighted to bring “Queen of the Mountain” to our “Meet
the Filmmaker” series. It is certainly one of the most fascinating and colorful
documentaries I have seen this year. “Queen of the Mountain” chronicles the
story of Theresa Goell, a pioneer female archaeologist. Born in
in 1901, she ignored the dictates
of her family, the social norms of her era, and the limitations imposed by her
own body (she was nearly deaf), opting instead for a life of challenge and
adventure as an archaeologist, a man’s profession at that time. In so doing, she
achieved her lifelong dream at the age of 50: leading the excavation of Nemrud
Dagh, a now-famous archaeological site in southeastern

Martha Lubell, the producer of “Queen of the Mountain,” is the niece
of Theresa Goell. The New York Times called this film, “a strong, rich narrative
with visuals to match." “Queen of the
Mountain” was broadcast on PBS stations WHYY in
and WNET in
New
York in March, 2006. The documentary
won the Best Film by Jury and the Audience Award at the Archaeology Channel Film
Festival in 2006 and first prize at the Explorers Club Film Festival. It has
also screened at the Santa Fe Film Festival, the Icronos Film Festival in
, the Agon Film festival in
and the Women''s Film Festival in
, Lubell
co-produced and directed Daring to Resist with filmmaker Barbara Attie. The film
was broadcast nationally on PBS. It screened at film festivals including the
Double Take (now Full Frame) International Documentary Festival at
, and the Human Rights Watch
International Film Festival at . The film won first prize for
Holocaust Biography, International Jewish Video Competition,
, and Grand Prize Documentary,
Atlantic City Film Festival. Lubell''s other documentary films include Faces of
the Holocaust and Crosstown.
Lubell was associate producer for the
Discovery Network''s Emmy Award-winning series Teacher TV. She produced two
documentary series for WHYY Public Radio: Hard Times for Dreaming and When a
Plant Closes. She was a researcher for CBS News and ABC News in
New
