James Dean walks down Broadway, his shoulders hunched against the drizzle. This iconic black and white photograph is the work of Dennis Stock (1928 - 2010), the subject of “BEYOND ICONIC:  PHOTOGRAPHER DENNIS STOCK.” This documentary introduces us to one of the most influential chroniclers of the late 20th century in his own words and through hundreds of his famous photographs. More than a biographic documentary, BEYOND ICONIC also brings us into Dennis Stock's photography workshop and home shortly before his passing. The film goes beyond and delves into the meaning of photography, life and art.  Stock’s prolific photography captured not only history, but recorded his life as well.  Both a form of art and a way to record reality, photography relates to our very existence.  In Stock’s words, “It is a marvelous way of saying ‘I’ve been here! BEYOND ICONIC was shown at DOC NYC, The Starz Denver Film Festival, Hot Springs, Rotterdam Fotoweek’s  “On Photography” Film Festival,  FilmColumbia and it was a finalist at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival.  BEYOND ICONIC will have its broadcast premier on Dutch Public Television (AVRO)’s “Close-Up” program in March 2014.

Hanna Sawka, producer, director and editor of BEYOND ICONIC is a graduate of Smith College (cum laude in English/Theater) and she holds a MFA in Film, Theater and TV Directing from the Polish National Film, TV and Theater School in Lodz (PWSFTviT, alma mater of Krzysztof Kieslowski and Roman Polanski). From 1999 - 2002, while still a graduate student, Hanna directed bimonthly crime re-enactments for a nationally broadcast prime-time crime show (Polish National Television). Her episodes enjoyed high ratings and one of them led to the incarceration of a rapist and murderer.  Since 1999, Hanna has written, produced and directed 5 short films, both fiction and documentary, including three on 35mm, which together have garnered nominations and awards at 16 festivals around the world. She has also directed professionally for the theater and is a published author.
