Mowgli, an incredible and visually stunning classical ballet, was written by the 13-year-old prodigy Alex Prior who at the ripe old age of 15 was also the conductor for this performance. Born to a Russian mother and a British father, Alex was raised in England. He is currently enrolled in graduate studies in composition at the Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia. His great-grandfather was the famous Stanislavsky, his grandfather was an architect who designed and built one of the museums on Red Square, and several of his relatives have performed as premier dancers with the Bolshoi Ballet. Alex is wonderful, intelligent, fun-loving and a distinguished musician. Mowgli is based on Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. It is a full-length classical ballet, produced and performed by The Moscow Classical Ballet, complete with beautiful sets, costumes, and a symphonic orchestra. The score has some unusual instrumentation, and it also includes a chorus. The choreographers are Natalia Kasatkina and her husband Vladimir Vasilyov, both premier dancers with the Bolshoi Ballet. Mowgli is a wonderful children’s ballet, and has every earmark of becoming a classic. The audience, filled with children, certainly loved it.
The host of this documentary is the incomparable Angela Lansbury who, as a prominent citizen of stage and screen, has recently had a triumph in her Broadway performances of Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward. She will be returning to Broadway in the Sondheim classic A Little Night Music with Catherine Zeta-Jones.
