 \n	\n \n	\n *Free to NY NATAS Members! \n	\n $15 for those without cur
 rent NY NATAS membership.\n	\n \n	\n In 1970, Bill Fore, the Director o
f the Department of Broadcasting &amp\; Film at the National Council of Ch
urches, called Sumner Jules Glimcher, then the Manager of the Center for M
ass Communication at Columbia University. Each year, said Fore, the NCC d
ecided on a topic that needed national attention and created documents tha
t were sent to member churches for discussion. The topic for the followin
g year was going to be &ldquo\;Poverty in Latin America&rdquo\; and the NC
C had raised sufficient funds to commission a documentary to be the center
piece for the upcoming year. Fore asked Glimcher if CMC would make the fi
lm. One major problem would be that although most interviews would be con
ducted in Spanish, of course the completed film must be in English. The b
udget allowed for a crew of five: producer/director\; cinematographer\; s
oundman\; interviewer and a representative of the NCC. Gustavo Nieto-Roa,
not only bi-lingual, but actually a native of Bogot&aacute\; was selected
as cinematographer. Warren Johnson served as director of sound, and also
as the second cameraman. Bill Wipfler, an associate of the NCC was not on
ly the bi-lingual interviewer, but also greatly knowledgeable in all thing
s Latin American. Laura Hogan was the representative of the NCC. Since t
he funds were insufficient to shoot in multiple countries, it was decided
to confine the location to one country representative to most of Latin Ame
rica, and that nation was Colombia. The CMC crew spent one month on locati
on and covered all aspects of that nation from the richest to the poorest
and &ldquo\;A Problem of Power,&rdquo\; a 45-minute work was the result.
Although produced several decades ago, it is apparent that most of the pro
blems then have changed little in the intervening years.\n	\n \n	\n Abo
