entury Fox (then known as the Fox Film Corp.) began production of what was
to become Hollywood's longest-running series of films. All told, 47 Charl
ie Chan movies were produced by Fox and other studios. Chan was a fictiona
l Chinese-American detective from the Honolulu Police Department who solve
d crimes around the world by summing up the facts with clever and witty qu
otes told to his Number 1 Son. Asian wisdom became American pop culture. T
he most famous actors who portrayed Chan were Warner Oland followed by Sid
ney Toler. In the 1960s when movies began to be popular and important telev
ision programming, Warner Bros. (then Warner Bros.-Seven Arts) acquired fr
om Fox the TV rights to a large library of its films including 21 of the &
#8220\;Best Of&#8221\; the Chans starring Oland and Toler. These Chan movi
es were previously distributed to TV by other companies and were considere
d just a &#8220\;throw-in&#8221\; for the deal with Fox, and little was ex
pected from the sales department. That&#8217\;s when the &#8220\;The Great
Charlie Chan&#8221\; documentary was born. Harvey Chertok, then WB&#8217\
;s VP, Advertising, Promotion, Publicity, and his associate Martha Torge t
ook on a challenge and came up with a plan to make $1,000,000 with these C
han films. (That was considered a lot in the 1960s.) One day they made a c
hart to show how they would do it and presented it to the W7 CEO, Eliot Hy
man, who smiled and nodded OK.--&#8220\;Long journey always start with one
short step.&#8221\;The plan included a Charlie Chan Film Festival at the
Museum Of Modern Art and the production of this documentary to kick-off th
is gala press event which included a First Class buffet of Chinese food in
the museum&#8217\;s outdoor sculpture garden. (What an evening!) From tha
t moment on this documentary helped to launch WB&#8217\;s series of 21 Cha
ns on some 50 TV stations--and was also sold to Canada&#8217\;s CBC as a N
etwork Special.--&#8220\;With proper lever, baby's fingers can move mounta
ins.&#8221\;In addition, Chertok and Torge created a book for Golden Press
 &#8212\;&#8220\;Quotations From Charlie Chan&#8221\;&#8212\;which included
Chan&#8217\;s many famous quotes, and photos from the 21 films. And sever
al stations bought quantities of the books to use for audience promotion.
(The series&#8217\; sales goal was exceeded.)--&#8220\;When money talks, f
