y Sumner Jules Glimcher\n \nWith Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One, filmmake
r William Greaves abandons the moorings of conventional cinema to explore
the fine line that separates fact from fiction. When Greaves goes so far a
s to abdicate his role as director, a beleaguered crew is left to try to f
igure out what the film is about, actors struggle with admittedly over-the
-top dialogue, while Central Park inhabitants wander into the frame to bec
ome a part of the filmmaking process. Symbio defies easy description but i
s considered to be one of the most focused and insightful movies ever made
about making movies. Shot in Central Park in 1968, Symbio was “discover
ed” in 1991 and is now a favorite among cinema buffs. It was released th
eatrically in 2005 and is available on DVD along with its 2005 sequel, Sym
 biopsychotaxiplasm Take 2 ½, in a special 2-disc edition from Criterion.\
n\n\n“[Symbio] remains as risk-taking as ever, challenging assumptions a
bout cinema, storytelling and the gossamer boundaries between fiction and
fact.”\nJohn Anderson, Newsday, October 26, 2005\n\n“A blast from the
past that’s as fresh as tomorrow.”\nNathan Lee, The New York Sun, Octo
ber 26, 2005\n\n“… a movie that enters our film history so decisively
it seems like it’s always been there.”\nJ. Hoberman, The Village Voice
\n\n“ a witty, still-timely, and extraordinary satire on filmmaking theo
ry and technique that ranks with the liveliest of formal experiments of Je
an-Luc Goddard , John Cassavetes and Andy Warhol.”\nArmond White, The Ci
ty Sun\n\n“Fascinating, highly entertaining and, at moments, revelatory.
”\nManohla Dargis, The New York Times, October 26, 2005\n\n“Greaves’
s place in history is unarguable, whether it’s then, now, in the future,
or all of the above.”\nAtkinson, The Village Voice, Oct 26-Nov 1, 2005\
