nProduced &amp\; Moderated by Sumner Jules Glimcher\n\nThe brilliant docum
entary filmmaker, Gene Searchinger has made “Paradox on 72nd Street,”
a film examining the paradox in society between man’s need to be an indi
vidual and his equal instinct toward conformity. He has used the busy corn
er of 72nd Street and Broadway in New York City as a metaphor to make his
point. In his film, this busy intersection becomes a microcosm of human in
teraction. Philip Slater (society watcher) and Lewis Thomas, M.D. (biology
watcher), discuss the paradoxical nature of man's personality and behavio
ral patterns--the struggle between individualism and collectivity, indepen
dence and dependence. In this anthropological study, systems, and institut
ions, which provide order and control, are analyzed as well as the unconsc
ious gestures and modes of etiquette, which human beings impose on themsel
ves.\n\nThere are shots in this film from the window of Mr. Searchinger’
s office, which over-looked the corner that he studied when he made this f
ilm. The two experts that Gene depended on for opinions and academic heft
are Lewis Thomas, the late great essayist (The Lives of a Cell) and self-s
tyled biology watcher, and Philip Slater the author of The Pursuit of Lone
liness and former head of Brandeis University Department of Sociology. \n\
nReviews:\n\n"A remarkable documentary. There is nothing specifically rema
rkable in Paradox on 72nd Street, yet it is all remarkable." Tom Jory, Ass
ociated Press\n\n"If an anthropologist can study one village and then writ
e about a whole culture, why can't we take one block in America as our mic
rocosm? Of course, we all know New York isn't America. But if this isn't A
merica, where is it?" \n\n"It's intellectually provocative, visually excel
lent, and wonderfully informative." Sidney Morgenbesser, philosopher, Colu
mbia University\n\nClemente D'Alessio on staff at the Metropolitan Opera a
s the producer of Live from the Met when Gene Searchinger directed documen
tary films, which were played on air during the intermissions of live broa
dcasts. He considers Mr. Searchinger a friend and mentor who has helped to
  shape his skills as a producer/ director. D’Alessio is a five-time Emmy
winner and Founder and President of D’Alessio Media, Inc., a company co
mmitted to the international broadcast of the performing arts. \n\n\n\n\n-
