What’s Next? Kid-Created Media: Meet the Kids Who are Redefining TV, New Media and Education

A screening of work created and presented by kids, ages 11-16.

JFK High School (Bronx, NY) media technology program
A NYC Department of Education program that is less than one year old. High school students, learn to create media content, (ex. music, video, graphics) in a Career & Technical Education (CTE) program. Students are involved in a rigorous curriculum which leads them to being professionally certified in pro applications like Final Cut Pro, Logic, various Adobe software, etc.
The program has produced dramatic and rapid turnarounds for students who were considered "At-Risk". The most extraordinary part is that the results impact on a broader scale: academic performance improvement across all subjects areas as well as attendance.
SoundBites - music technology and songwriting program
Like Outward Bound using music. Middle school kids collaboratively create, produce and record a composition at a "boot camp" set in a professional recording studio. Using a total immersion technique, kids work under tight deadlines as in a professional film or TV production. The curriculum is about collaboration, team building, interpersonal skill development, unlocking creative potential and balancing creativity, productivity and group dynamics. BYkids
Facilitates the production of kid-created documentary films, pairing prominent American filmmakers like Albert Maysles and Ric Burns, with youth from around the world to create short documentaries that educate Americans about globally relevant issues (www.bykids.org). Since these kids are in places like Mozambique and India, we will bring in our presenter (hopefully the 16 year old exiled king of Tibet) from overseas via video link. BYkids film mentor, executive producer Neal Baer (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, ER) will facilitate the discussion.
The kids who created the screened work will host the event and reception. Each group will present a short clip, followed by Q and A. The event is for Academy members and invited guests.
