About The New York Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences

The New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is the preeminent membership organization serving the Television industry.

NY NATAS is a professional service organization dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of television and the promotion of creative leadership for artistic, educational and technical achievements within the television industry. 

NY NATAS provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and discussion of industry problems and concerns. It affords opportunities for you to meet your colleagues on both a professional and social basis. It promotes professional development by offering avenues for contributing to the industry and the community.

NY NATAS conducts activities that cultivate, promote and encourage understanding of, appreciation for, and public interest in the arts, crafts and sciences of television. We recognize outstanding achievement, we encourage the pursuit of excellence and we promote the highest standards of quality in television by conferring the industry’s classic and most coveted peer-recognition symbol of distinction, the Emmy®.

Background

The New York Chapter was founded on November 15, 1955. Ed Sullivan served as our first president.

The New York Chapter is the flagship chapter of 19 in the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences: Boston /New England, Chicago/Midwest, Cleveland, Heartland Chapter, Lone Star, Michigan, Mid-America, Mid-Atlantic, Nashville/Midsouth, National Capital/Chesapeake Bay, New York, Ohio Valley, Pacific Southwest, Rocky Mountain/Southwest, San Francisco/Northern California, Northwest, Southeast, Suncoast and Upper Midwest, as well as by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) in Los Angeles.

There are approximately 2,000 members of the New York Chapter and 15,000 members nationwide.

New York Chapter members come from all aspects of the television industry - production, post-production, managerial, talent, technical, support services, etc. - and from companies including broadcast networks, cable programming services, local stations, independent production companies, advertising agencies, unions, guilds and more.

The New York Chapter is financed primarily by membership dues, awards entry fees and occasional fundraising projects.

Policy for the New York Chapter is set by a Board of Governors comprising television professionals representing Broadcast Journalism, Creative Crafts, Design, Direction, Executives, Music, Performance, Production, Sales/Marketing, Writing and Advanced Media.

The Officers of the New York Chapter are: Shelly Palmer, President; Lydia Loizides, 1st Vice President; Karen Scott, 2nd Vice President; Denise Rover, Secretary; Chris Pizzurro, Treasurer.

The New York Chapter holds five seats on the National Board of Trustees. They are Lydia Loizides, Shelly Palmer, Chris Pizzurro, Karen Scott and Jim Turner. Jerry Romano serves as Alternate Trustee.
